Red Hill Park
Red Hill Park on the east bank of the Urumqi River, is a pleasant park for visitors to take energetic walks and go rowing. There are also some attractive pagodas and pavilions, the nicest of which is on the top of the Red hill. The Red Hill at the park is the symbol of Urumqi and a unique and spectacular part of the Urumqi landscape.
The hill got its name because of its reddish brown color. The hill is 1.5 km (0.93 miles) long and 1 km (0.62 miles) wide from east to west with an altitude of 910 meters (2,986 ft) above sea level.
The upper part of the mountain looks like the head of a tiger, so it is also called "Tiger Head Mountain." It faces Yamalike Mountain, less than 1,000 meters away. At the foot of the mountain is the Urumqi River, flowing from north to south. So the panoramic views of the diverse landscape, from desert to city, and snowcapped hills, make the steep climb up the hill worth the effort.
On the top of Hongshan Mountain is a statue of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) national hero Lin Zexu. A Qing pagoda (Zhenlong Ta) can be found half way up the mountain. This was built by one of the emperors to ward off the evil dragon and his spirits! There are also a few fairground rides within the grounds here, and a lake to boat on.
