Zhujiajiao
Zhujiajiao is a well-known ancient water town located in a suburb of Shanghai city. Covering an area of 47 square kilometers, with a history of more than 1700 years, the little fan-shaped town is the most well reserved ancient town in Shanghai and has been known as Venice of Shanghai. The town is endowed with another elegant name - 'Pearl Stream' for it like a bright pearl in the landscape of lakes and mountains.
The bridges in Zhujiajiao are the fine view you can't miss. The old town is thoroughly connected by 36 delicate spans in different shapes and styles, from wooden to stone to marble, built during Ming and Qing Dynasties. Fangsheng
Bridge (Setting-fish-free Bridge), built in 1571, is the longest, largest and tallest stone bridge with a stone tablet and 4 lifelike stone lions. Lang Bridge (Veranda Bridge) is the only wooden bridge. It features wooden bars on the two sides and upturned eaves above, just like a narrow corridor.
North Street Only one kilometer long is an ancient street filled with representative ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The whole street is at once primitively simple, yet very elegant.
Zhujiajiao boasts imposing gardens built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Among the ancient architecture, Ke Zhi Yuan is the largest manorial garden in the town.
The ancient town is simple and tranquil, refined and elegant. Walking along the zigzag flagging or wondering among the narrow streets and lanes flanked with shops and stores, tourists feel as if they were in a simple but fresh wash painting: small bridges above giggling water, residence of the Ming and Qing styles, small dark-awning boats lying at anchor, sweeping willows swaying along riverbanks, and stone bridge spanning the Dianpu River like a beautiful rainbow. Inside the town are rivers and bridges, giving tourists a sense of the ancient time.
