Summer Resort
The Summer Resort, situated in the northern part of Chengde, Hebei Province, covers an area of 564 square meters, almost half of Chengde's urban area. It is one of China's leading scenic spots and the world's largest imperial garden, which served as the summer resort and hunting ground for emperors of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Construction began in 1703 under the rule of Emperor Kang Xi and was completed in 1790 under the rule of Emperor Qian Long. In 1994, UNESCO inscribed Chengde Mountain Resort and its outlying temples on the World Heritage List.
There are more than 100 buildings within the resort, which is divided into two sections: palace zone and garden zone. The Rehe (Jehol), the shortest river in the world, only 14.7 kilometers long, runs through the resort.

The palace zone is located in the southern part of the resort, made up of the Main Palace, Pine-Crane Hall, Pine Soughing Valley and East Palace. In this zone there are the gray tiles and the plain bricks with the winding old pines and the thick crown of trees, in which you'll have a chance to feel the real nature, grace and primitive simplicity.
The garden zone consists of three parts: the lake zone ,the plain zone and the mountain zone. The lake zone is divided into many small lakes and the scenery of the lake zone sparkles like a diamond in the Summer Resort. The plain zone was the place where the Qing emperors held banquets and recreational activities. This area ismainly covered with grassland and woods. The mountain zone is pleasantly cool and a best place to spend the summer holidays. Architectures in this zone, adopting the styles both of the Southland and of North China, are of great artistic value.
